Around the world of short films in one day
Pangea Day, a one-day event designed to use short films to bring people from various cultures closer together, is scheduled to be held May 10 in cities around the world.
The event is the brainchild of documentary filmmaker Jehane Noujaim, who asks: “If you had the world’s attention for five minutes, what story would you tell?”
Organizers are asking professional and amateur filmmakers to submit films of five minutes or less by Feb. 15.
They can register their submissions at www.pangeaday .org.
The event, which will feature a four-hour program of screenings, speakers and music, will be held in Cairo; Dharamsala, India; Jerusalem; Kigali, Rwanda; London; New York City; Ramallah, West Bank; and Rio de Janeiro. It will be broadcast live on the Internet, TV, digital cinemas and mobile phones, organizers say.
“Movies alone can’t change the world,” Noujaim noted, “but the people who watch them can.”
The event is being put on with the help of an organization called TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design), which sponsors an annual conference that brings together innovators in various fields.
