NEW IN TOWN
El Caserio brings South American charm to an unlikely piece of real estate just off the 101 freeway in Silver Lake. A lush, enclosed brick patio shaded by a majestic Japanese elm tree and the handsome dining room -- with its intimate bar and polished wooden floors -- feel hidden from the world. Opened last month as a sister restaurant to the 25-year-old El Caserio on Virgil, this otherworldly eatery offers Ecuadorian and Italian fusion fare. House specialties include salmon in a baby dill sauce with cheese-filled potato pancakes and ceviche de mar with avocado and red potatoes. Quito-born owner William Velasco says his new endeavor has been five years in the making: “I love this property -- the way it is shaped and its home-style feel.” 401 Silver Lake Blvd., (213) 273-8945
