Football is the top draw during the holiday lull
The New England Patriots’ completion of the NFL’s first undefeated regular season since 1972 was both the most-watched show of the television season and the most-watched regular-season game since 1995, in a week when seven of the 15 most-watched prime-time television programs were NFL games or pre- or postgame shows.
The Patriots’ 38-35 victory over the New York Giants on Saturday averaged a combined 33.4 million viewers on CBS, NBC and cable’s NFL Network, according to figures released Thursday by Nielsen Media Research.
The audience was the largest for any television program since the Academy Awards on Feb. 25 and for any NFL regular season game since the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs’ Thanksgiving Day game in 1995.
The game was also shown on other stations in New York City, Boston and Manchester, N.H. Viewership figures for those channels were not available.
In a week when there was little original entertainment programming, as is TV’s custom during the final week of the year, CBS was the most-watched network for the 10th time in the season’s 14 weeks, with an average of 8.56 million viewers watching its prime-time programming between Dec. 24 and Sunday.
NBC was second with 8.21 million, followed by Fox with 6.06 million, ABC with 5.21 million and CW with 1.66 million.
NBC finished first among viewers ages 18 to 49, the group it, ABC and Fox target and advertisers covet.
ESPN was the week’s most-watched cable network, averaging 4.52 million viewers, making it the fifth most-watched network overall, behind only CBS, NBC, Fox and ABC.
Here are the rankings for national prime-time network television last week (Dec. 24-30) as compiled by Nielsen Media Research. They are based on the average number of people who watched a program from start to finish. Nielsen estimates there are 286 million potential viewers in the U.S. ages 2 and older. Viewership is listed in millions.
