Two fatal traffic accidents occurred within a few miles of each other early Sunday on the 210 Freeway, including one that was ruled a suicide, authorities said. An unidentified 40-year-old man climbed over the fence of the eastbound 210 overpass at North Towne Avenue and jumped onto the freeway below, where he was struck by a van, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the van was not at fault and was not hurt, officials said.
Less than an hour later, a 68-year-old woman traveling east in a Chevrolet Impala tried to avoid hitting a Ford Escape ahead of her by swerving right.
She struck the Ford, and the front of her car became partially wedged under a truck to her right, said authorities, who added that the truck was moving at about 10 mph.
The woman, identified as Dixie Waschuck of Arizona, was pronounced dead at the scene; no others were injured, the CHP said.
