at Tampa Bay 9, Detroit 3: The Rays set a franchise record for home wins in a season (42) in front of a sellout crowd of 36,048 at Tropicana Field. At 65-44, they have the second-best record in baseball and are one victory shy of matching their total for last year, when they were a major league-worst 66-96. “We have 11 hits, three runs. They have 11 hits, nine runs. That’s not good,” said Tigers Manager Jim Leyland.
at Boston 12, Oakland 2: Jason Bay hit his first home run with the Red Sox, and Kevin Youkilis hit a pair of two-run homers. Bay drilled a 3-and-1 pitch from Dana Eveland over the Green Monster, a three-run shot that gave the Red Sox a 5-2 lead in the first inning.
Cleveland 5, at Minnesota 1: Kelly Shoppach hit a two-run homer to lead the Indians. The Twins had a chance to move into first place in the Central Division for the first time since May 13 but remained half a game behind the Chicago White Sox.
Baltimore 3, at Seattle 1: Jeremy Guthrie retired 26 of the last 28 batters he faced in his first complete game, yielding only four hits. His previous best was 8 1/3 innings against Boston last year. He overcame a rocky start to win for the sixth time in his last seven decisions.
Toronto 6, at Texas 4: Rod Barajas and Scott Rolen each had two-run doubles during the sixth inning. A.J. Burnett (13-9) improved to 7-2 since June 24.
at Kansas City 9, Chicago 7: Mark Buehrle, a Royals nemesis for much of his career, had his shortest and worst start of the season.
at New York 8, Angels 2: Former Angel Jose Molina hit one of four home runs against Jered Weaver.
