2 rare dual-star systems found
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Ohio researchers have found a rare star system in which two very bright, massive yellow stars orbit each other.
The two stars, each with 15 to 20 times the mass of the sun, are so close together that they share much of their stellar material, giving the system the appearance of a peanut, the researchers reported Monday in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.
After finding what was believed to be the one-of-a-kind system 13 million light-years away, the team searched and found a second one less than 230,000 light-years away in the Small Magellenic Cloud.
