Coroner’s officials are trying to determine if two people found dead near a wrecked sport utility vehicle below Malibu Canyon Road are a Simi Valley couple missing since late July.
The Los Angeles County sheriff’s search and rescue team early Saturday recovered the bodies of the man and woman in steep, rugged terrain about two miles north of Pacific Coast Highway. The wreckage of the 1999 Jeep Cherokee was discovered 600 feet from the roadway. The victims apparently had been thrown from the vehicle, officials said.
Simi Valley residents Robert J. Callender, 63, and his wife, Barbara, 62, were last seen July 28. Their 1999 Jeep Cherokee also has been missing.
Autopsies will be conducted Monday or Tuesday.
