American Steve Buscemi, German Ulrich Tukur and rising Chinese actress Zhang Jingchu will star in a movie about the true story of a German businessman who shielded people from Japanese slaughter in World War II-era China, one of the film’s investors said Monday.
Tukur, seen in the Oscar-winning movie “The Lives of Others,” will play the title role in “John Rabe,” a German businessman and Nazi follower in Nanjing at the time of the Japanese occupation, Chinese movie company Huayi Brothers said in a statement.
Buscemi will play a doctor who helps Rabe protect Chinese refugees, while Zhang will portray a student whose family is targeted by Japanese troops, the company said.
