Rookie wins first title on PGA Tour

Not until the 18th tee did George McNeill finally show just how special a day he’d had, smiling and waving to the camera.

The 32-year-old rookie won his first career PGA Tour title easily Sunday, shooting a five-under-par 67 for a 23-under 264 total and a four-stroke victory over D.J. Trahan in the Frys.com Open at Las Vegas.

Leading by five strokes entering the final round, McNeill earned $720,000 in a tournament without a top-20 player.

Bernhard Langer matched the Champions Tour scoring records for a 54-hole event, closing with an eight-under 64 for an eight-stroke victory in the Administaff Small Business Classic at Spring, Texas.

Langer finished at 25-under 191 and matched the scoring records for relation to par and low score. Loren Roberts also had a 25-under 191 total in the 2006 MasterCard Championship, and Bruce Fleisher finished the 2002 RJR Championship at 19-under 191. Mark O’Meara (68) finished second, and Tom Kite (69) was third at 16 under.

Ernie Els won his seventh World Match Play Championship title by beating Angel Cabrera, 6 and 4, in the final at Virginia Water, England.
