* No. 7 South Carolina 21, at North Carolina 15: Chris Smelley threw a career-high three touchdown passes in the first half at Chapel Hill, N.C., and the Gamecocks (6-1) held off a late rally by the Tar Heels (2-5). South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier wasn’t happy with his team’s play in the second half, taking responsibility for what he said was a “putrid offense†that gained 62 yards after the break and rushed more than twice as often as it passed. “We were playing well, up 21-3, and we tried to run and call [conservative plays], and then we couldn’t throw it later,†Spurrier said.
* No. 12 Virginia Tech 43, at Duke 14: Sean Glennon threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns in relief of injured Tyrod Taylor at Durham, N.C., and the Hokies (6-1, 3-0) built a 34-7 lead at halftime against the Blue Devils (1-6, 0-4) to win their seventh in a row in the series.
