Criticism of Sputnik logo is unfair
To those pseudo-conservatives who complain that Google’s logo recognized the anniversary of the Soviets’ Sputnik launch, (“Logo tweak sends critics into orbit,†Oct. 9), I would like to point out that NASA also recognizes the anniversaries of Sputnik and the first man in space, Russian Yuri Gagarin.
In fact, NASA’s chief administrator, Michael Griffin, traveled to Moscow to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the launch. And Peggy Whitson became about the 10th American astronaut to fly aboard the Russian Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station.
America’s efforts to complete the station would have failed after the 2003 shuttle accident if not for substantial cooperation between the two space programs.
