TB vaccine may be hurting infants
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The Bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccine, aimed at protecting children in developing countries from tuberculosis, may be killing and sickening some vulnerable infants infected with the AIDS virus, researchers said Friday.
Because the BCG vaccine is made using a live microbe, a bovine version of tuberculosis, it can itself cause the disease in people with weak immune systems.
The findings are included in a report from the Forum for Collaborative HIV Research about the global health emergency caused by AIDS and TB, which are often paired.
