Driven to a detour

Re “A cure for road rage: close road,” June 7

Congratulations to Caltrans for closing the road to prevent road rage incidents. We need safe working conditions for road workers. They already have to cope with the threat of industrial accidents. They don’t need the extra hazard of irresponsible, stupid people.

Angry drivers have been threatening and hitting bicyclists for years. I hope flagmen get more law enforcement help than bicyclists -- the original road rage victims -- ever got, or get.

Although it is distressing to hear of the attacks aimed at workers on the California 138 project, it is not surprising. I live off of Pearblossom Highway between the 138 and Highway 14. This stretch of four-lane road has no fewer than four stoplights on it, passes by an elementary school and residential areas, and there is no controlled access. The posted speed limit? Sixty-five miles per hour, the same as for a controlled access freeway. What’s wrong with this picture? It is this lackadaisical attitude toward public safety concerns that has driven people to feel that they own the roads. I hope the road closing doesn’t prompt road rage toward folks along the detour.
