Marly de Oliveira, 69; respected Brazilian poet, professor of literature

Marly de Oliveira, 69, an award-winning Brazilian poet, died of multiple organ failure Friday in Rio de Janeiro after being hospitalized for four months, the Brazilian Academy of Letters announced.
She was the widow of Joao Cabral de Melo Neto, who was considered one of the 20th century’s most distinguished and influential poets in the Portuguese language. He died in 1999.
Oliveira was elected to the academy in 1998 and won Brazil’s prestigious Jabuti prize for “O Mar de Permeio” or “The Sea Between Us,” a collection of poems about anguish and emptiness.
A professor of Hispanic and Italian literature, Oliveira wrote seven other volumes of poetry among other works in a career spanning more than 40 years.
