Robert Fitch, 84; ex-chief administrative officer for Riverside County

Robert Fitch, 84, a former chief administrative officer for Riverside County and a local historian, died of a heart attack Wednesday while visiting the Biola University campus in La Mirada.
Fitch began working for the county in 1950 as an assistant probation officer and retired in 1984 as chief administrative officer.
Over the years he was influential in the development of Riverside County, and during his retirement he remained active in civic life as a volunteer.
Fitch was born March 12, 1923, in Farnam, Neb., and moved to Riverside after graduating from high school.
During World War II he served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Forces.
A history buff, Fitch wrote two books, “Profile of a Century: Riverside County, California, 1893-1993,” and “Roman Warren: Cowboy Aviator,” which tells the true story of an aviator who made a historic flight under the arch of Riverside’s Mission Bridge in 1926.
