Savagery toward helpless dogs

Re “This PR nightmare is in a league of its own,” July 19

Those who have participated in the torture, mutilation and murder of innocent animals may elude conviction in the legal system. What they cannot escape is conviction by their fellow humans. In their savagery toward these helpless dogs, they have crossed a moral boundary from which they cannot return. If he’s guilty, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick should be removed from the NFL. It has been said that the arc of a moral universe bends toward justice. Insist that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell prove it.

The alleged grotesque and cruel treatment of dogs by Vick is shocking and disgusting. It is hard to imagine that the same horrific treatment is inflicted on chickens, pigs and cows every day on factory farms. The animal that ends up as a chicken nugget, a hamburger, a steak or bacon was beaten, shocked, de-beaked (chickens), imprisoned in a cage or pen, artificially impregnated, milked dry (cows), forced to lay eggs to exhaustion (chickens), deprived of any natural activity (including bonding with offspring) and then executed.
