Did ‘Scooter’ skip out on justice?

Re “Bush spares Libby from prison,” July 3
As alleged conservatives celebrate President Bush’s commutation of the prison sentence of former White House aide I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, they show their true colors.
They are not principled, as they would have us believe. Only partisan.

Any defense lawyer can now maintain that the president says there should be no jail sentence for perjury.
What a precedent this sets for our judicial system.

American Justice, born July 4, 1776; died July 2, 2007. Cause of death: repeated stab wounds by mortal arrogance. Assailant(s) still at large. R.I.P.

I agree with President Bush that prison was not appropriate and commend him for upholding the spirit of the law with respect to a public servant doing his job.

So Whitewater figure Susan McDougal goes to jail for refusing to tell lies, and Libby avoids jail after being convicted of telling lies.
And the conservatives say justice is served?

Your July 3 front page had a picture of Bush and a caption that quotes him as saying, “ ‘a harsh punishment’ remained for I. Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby: two years or probation, a $250,000 fine, a felony conviction and a reputation forever damaged.”
Funny, President Clinton didn’t get any jail time for lying under oath, and if he is damaged in any way, I must have missed it.

Truer words were never spoken: “If there is a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is. And if the person has violated law, the person will be taken care of.” Bush, Sept. 30, 2003.

During Bush’s five years as governor of Texas, there were 152 executions. Not once did Bush grant clemency to a death row inmate.
Yet now he finds any jail sentence for Libby to be too harsh.
Am I the only one appalled by this hypocrisy?

So what’s next for Libby? His own TV show? With Iran-Contra figure Oliver North as co-host?
