Police arrested three men and broke up a plot to attack U.S. military officers who train Colombian police and soldiers in a popular weekend getaway, the U.S. Embassy in Bogota said.
The arrests occurred Saturday in the central city of Melgar, home to the Tolemaida military base, which houses a training center for anti-drug agents. The men were caught with explosives, grenades and, according to Caracol Radio, a photo of a diplomatic vehicle.
The arrests came two days after the embassy warned that the nation’s largest guerrilla group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, may have been preparing an unspecified plot against U.S. citizens in Melgar. The embassy had urged U.S. citizens to avoid the town.
An embassy spokesman said it was unclear whether the U.S. military trainers were the sole targets.
