Duchscherer is out for the season

Oakland right-hander Justin Duchscherer will undergo season-ending surgery on his injured right hip, the latest injury news to hit the Athletics’ bullpen this season.
Duchscherer, an All-Star in 2005, had been sidelined since May 15 because of soreness in his arthritic right hip that didn’t get better with rest and rehabilitation. Duchscherer was called back from a minor league rehab assignment in late May when the injury flared up again and called off a throwing session Sunday.
With closer Huston Street and setup man Kiko Calero also spending time on the disabled list this season, Oakland’s bullpen has been short-handed.

Anthony Reyes, who has lost 12 straight regular-season decisions, was optioned to the minors by the St. Louis Cardinals to make room for Braden Looper in the rotation.
Reyes is 0-10 this season and hasn’t won a regular-season game since last Sept. 6.
Looper was activated from the 15-day disabled list. He was 6-6 with a 4.66 ERA in his first year as a starter before being disabled on June 16.

Left-hander Oliver Perez was put on the 15-day disabled list by the New York Mets, a move retroactive to June 27.
“He has some soreness in his lower back, but nothing wrong with his arm,” Manager Willie Randolph said.

Pittsburgh Pirates left-hander Zach Duke was told he doesn’t have structural damage in his sore pitching elbow, and will seek a second opinion this week.
Duke was told he has irritation in his ulnar collateral ligament that can be cured by rest.

Washington Nationals starter Micah Bowie went on the disabled list because of a hip injury and the team called up Tim Redding, who will become the 10th starter and 20th pitcher used by Washington this year.
