Four soldiers who died in Baghdad attack were from the Southland

The Department of Defense said Sunday that four of five soldiers killed Thursday in south Baghdad called Southern California home.
The dead Southern California soldiers were Army Pfc. Cory F. Hiltz, 20, of La Verne.; Sgt. Shin W. Kim, 23, of Fullerton; Sgt. Michael J. Martinez, 24, of Chula Vista; and Sgt. Giann Carlo Joya Mendoza, 27, of North Hollywood. The fifth soldier, Spc. Dustin L. Workman II, 19, came from Greenwood, Neb.
All five were assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division at Ft. Carson, Colo.
As previously reported, the soldiers were killed when insurgents detonated a roadside bomb and fired guns and grenades at the stricken convoy. Seven more soldiers were wounded.
