Coins for carts

Re the article describing how grocery carts are removed from the stores and wind up abandoned on the city streets (Jan. 12).
In France and Italy, and probably other countries, this problem is solved very easily.
You park your car and walk to a cart collection spot similar to those in our markets. The difference is that at the European markets, the carts are locked in place. To secure one, you push a coin into a slot on the cart, which releases the cart. The coin is of sufficient value that when you have finished your shopping, it is worthwhile for you to return the cart, push it in line firmly and be rewarded with a similar coin popping up in the slot. It works.
