Wisconsin holds off Ohio State

Kammron Taylor scored 25 points and No. 3 Wisconsin survived a late charge by Greg Oden and No. 5 Ohio State to hold on for a 72-69 victory Tuesday night at Madison, Wis.

The Badgers, 16-1 overall, 2-0 in the Big Ten Conference, used a 14-0 run midway through the second half to apparently take control.

But the Buckeyes (13-3, 2-1) rallied and closed within 69-64 on a dunk by Oden with 37 seconds remaining.

Taylor then made one of two free throws on the other end, and the Buckeyes’ Ron Lewis made a three-point basket to cut the lead to three with 25 seconds left.

Joe Krabbenhoft made one of two free throws for Wisconsin, and Oden again scored on a dunk with 8.9 seconds left to cut the lead to 71-69.

After Taylor again made one of two free throws, Jamar Butler missed a potential game-tying three-point shot at the buzzer.

No. 14 Alabama 71, No. 13 Louisiana State 61 -- Richard Hendrix scored 18 points and the Crimson Tide took advantage of cold shooting by the Tigers to win at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Rebounding from a 27-point loss Saturday at Arkansas, the Crimson Tide (14-2, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) held the Tigers (11-4, 0-1) to only 35% shooting and led by nine points at halftime.

No. 22 Notre Dame 61, No. 21 West Virginia 58 -- Russell Carter scored 19 points and kept the Mountaineers’ Frank Young from getting off a shot at the buzzer in the Fighting Irish’s win at South Bend, Ind. Notre Dame is 14-2, 3-1 in the Big East. West Virginia is 13-2, 3-1.

Nevada forward Nick Fazekas has a severely sprained ankle and is “extremely doubtful” for Thursday’s game at San Jose State. Coach Mark Fox said he hadn’t decided if Fazekas would travel to San Jose (1-13) on Thursday and to Hawaii (9-5) for a Saturday game.
