Cheney questions China’s buildup

On a visit to Australia, U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney said China’s recent antisatellite weapons test and its rapid military buildup were inconsistent with its stated aim of a peaceful rise as a global power.
Cheney praised China for playing an “especially important” role in six-nation negotiations that last week resulted in a deal with North Korea to eventually end its nuclear weapons programs.
The vice president also praised Australian Prime Minister John Howard, who sent 2,000 troops to join the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
