Highway to be closed in spring to protect bats

From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The state will close a desert highway heavily trafficked by off-road enthusiasts in the spring, rather than during the summer, to protect an endangered bat species.
California 78 will be closed between March 6 and April 30, peak season for dirt bikers going to Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area. San Felipe Bridge, home to an endangered bat species, will be widened.
Outdoor enthusiasts complain that the closure will add an hour to the drive from the coast.
