School board trims an additional $8.8 million

The Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education voted Wednesday to cut an additional $8.8 million from its budget for the 2007-08 school year.
The cuts, which will eliminate some administrative staff, delay the opening of Heroes Elementary School and remove several leased portable classrooms, are being made in response to declining student enrollment.
About $21 million, including $6 million to be achieved by eliminating 60 teaching positions, needs to be trimmed from the budget for the upcoming school year.
On Feb. 27, district trustees will consider more controversial proposals including the closure of Grant Elementary School and decreased spending on high school athletics, officials said.
