Marianne Fredriksson, 79; popular Swedish author and journalist

Marianne Fredriksson, 79, one of Sweden’s most admired and translated writers, died Sunday after a heart attack in her home near Stockholm, her agent said.
Fredriksson was the author of such international bestsellers as “According to Mary Magdalene,” “Simon’s Family” and “Hanna’s Daughters.”
Having worked as a newspaper journalist for decades, she wrote her first novel, “The Book of Eve,” in 1980 after a bout with depression.
She went on to write 16 more books and became one of the most popular writers in her homeland. Her works, which often dealt with biblical themes and focused on female characters, have also been translated into more than 40 languages.
