Profit tripled at the Stater Bros. supermarket chain in the latest quarter, the Colton-based company said Wednesday.
Stater Bros. Holdings Inc. said improved profit margins and declining expenses pushed its net income for its fiscal first quarter ended Dec. 24 to $9.9 million from $3.3 million.
With 162 stores, Stater Bros. is the largest privately held supermarket chain in Southern California. It discloses its earnings and sales because the company has public bonds.
Sales rose 4.3% to $904 million in the quarter. Same-store sales, an important measure of a retailer’s health, increased 1.4%.
