White House plan may boost mileage standards

The Bush administration has submitted draft legislation to Congress that would give regulators authority to raise automobile fuel economy standards.

The proposal submitted to the House Energy and Commerce Committee is a cornerstone of White House efforts to reduce U.S. oil consumption.

Currently, an automaker’s fleet of passenger cars must average 27.5 miles a gallon under the federal corporate average fuel economy standard.
