* at Carolina 4, Boston 3: Chad LaRose converted a penalty shot, and Eric Staal scored on a power play in the third period for the Hurricanes, who won consecutive home games for the first time since early November.

* Montreal 5, at Florida 1: Guillaume Latendresse, Michael Ryder and Christopher Higgins scored on the first three shots of the game for the Canadiens, and Cristobal Huet stopped 40 shots for Montreal.

* at New Jersey 2, Buffalo 1 (SO): Mike Mottau’s first goal since October got New Jersey even late in the third period, and Zach Parise came back from a sick day to score the only goal in the shootout.

* San Jose 1, at St. Louis 0: Evgeni Nabokov made 26 saves to earn his fifth shutout and help the Sharks extend their club-record road winning streak to eight. Nabokov has 39 career shutouts, fourth among active goaltenders.
