A man upset at his neighbor’s barking dog poisoned the animal with meatballs and hot dogs laced with rat poison, aspirin and cholesterol medication, the city attorney’s office said.
Lawrence Rothfork, 54, of North Hollywood pleaded no contest Wednesday to one count each of animal cruelty and animal poisoning, said city attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan.
The dog was treated by a veterinarian and recovered.
Rothfork was sentenced to six months in jail and 36 months of probation, but the jail term will be suspended if he completes 60 days’ work for the state Department of Transportation and stays out of trouble.
Superior Court Judge Michael Latin also fined Rothfork $3,555 and ordered him to attend an animal-cruelty counseling program.
