‘Morty’ Griffin

RE “Marvelous Party Known as Merv,” by Peter Barsocchini, Aug. 14: Many years ago, when Merv Griffin was on every night with interesting guests, my Russian-born grandmother would plant herself in front of the television and say, “Good, Morty Griffin is on!”
She never knew his given name; he seemed to transcend any generation and any culture. He kept you entertained from beginning to end. He listened, he laughed, he sang and played the piano and invited us all in to be a part of the fun. No insults, no ridicule were ever necessary to entertain his vast and loyal audience. He included everyone and made you feel welcomed at his party -- a trait sorely lacking in today’s brand of so-called entertainment.
Morty Griffin, you will be missed and always remembered! Thanks for the fun times!
