Offerman arrested, suspended in attack

From the Associated Press

Looking for a last chance in the majors, former Dodgers All-Star shortstop Jose Offerman was arrested Tuesday night after charging the mound and hitting the pitcher and catcher with his bat after being hit by a fastball during an independent minor league game in Bridgeport, Conn.

Offerman, playing for the Long Island Ducks, was charged with assault.

The Atlantic League suspended him indefinitely Wednesday and expected to make a final decision by the end of the week. He posted $10,000 bond and is due in Bridgeport Superior Court Aug. 23.

Bridgeport catcher John Nathans suffered a concussion likely to sideline him for the rest of the season. Pitcher Matt Beech suffered a broken finger. The game was delayed about 20 minutes and Offerman, Beech and Bridgeport Manager Tommy John were ejected.

At 38, Offerman was hitting .335 for the independent team and homered on the first pitch of Tuesday’s game.

Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder is appealing the three-game suspension handed down by the commissioner’s office, letting him remain in the lineup until his appeal is heard.

Fielder was suspended and fined an undisclosed amount for “inappropriate and aggressive conduct” during an argument over a strike with plate umpire Wally Bell on Sunday.

Pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim’s latest stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks lasted two starts. He was designated for assignment after being pulled 17 pitches into retiring only one batter in Tuesday’s 14-5 loss to Florida. Kim’s earned-run average was 23.63.
