Re “Israeli-Palestinian talks skirt specifics,” April 16
It surely is a good thing that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas have started to meet on a regular basis. By pursuing these meetings on a scheduled basis, Olmert and Abbas are taking power away from extremists on both sides who want to prevent peace. However, I fear progress will remain elusive until Israel recognizes it is in its best interest to have a prosperous and friendly Palestinian state next door, and the Palestinians recognize their self-interest is tied to having a secure and friendly Israeli state as their neighbor.
