LAPD officer kills motorist in scuffle after pedestrian hit

Times Staff Writer

A motorist who slammed into several cars and hit a woman in a crosswalk in North Hills was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon during a struggle with a Los Angeles police officer.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot by the officer, Sgt. Lee Sands said.

It was the second fatal officer-involved shooting in the San Fernando Valley this week.

Shortly past noon, the officer was flagged down by residents who reported that a man had been involved in traffic collisions near Nordoff Street and Sepulveda Boulevard, Sands said.

The officer, whose name was not immediately released, followed the man to a church parking lot at Langdon Avenue and Rayen Street.

When confronted by the officer, the motorist got out of his car and “a violent struggle took place,” Sands said. The officer fired twice, hitting the man, Sands said.

The officer was treated for minor injuries at a hospital.

The injured woman was treated for a broken hip and other injuries.
