In a matter of days, voters will go to the polls to pick the next governor of California, where the grizzly bear (Ursus californicus) is the official state animal. With that in mind, here’s a look at some who’ve held the office.

Jerry Brown: The text that accompanied a bear photograph depicting former Gov. Edmund G. “Jerry” Brown in the Oct. 26 West magazine said that Brown has remained in the political spotlight since “losing office.” He did not lose the governorship; he left voluntarily after two terms, then lost a race for the U.S. Senate. He is now mayor of Oakland.
