Police officers in Hawaii will place black bands across their badges in honor of a motorcycle officer who died after being injured last week escorting President Bush, authorities said.
Steve Favela, 30, and two other officers crashed their cycles as the presidential motorcade was crossing Hickam Air Force Base to meet troops for breakfast. The Honolulu Police Department officer and father of four had been in critical condition. The other officers have been released from the hospital.
Bush said in a statement that he and the first lady were “deeply saddened” by the death, and sent their condolences.
