A 17-year-old boy was killed and as many as five people were injured Wednesday when a car ran a red light and collided with a van in the Sylmar area, authorities said.
The teenager was identified as Xavier Rene Espinoza of San Fernando. Espinoza, an occupant in the van, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 7:30 a.m. crash at Hubbard Street and Jackman Avenue.
Los Angeles police said the adult driver of the van, an adult passenger and two other children in the vehicle -- a 13-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl -- were taken to hospitals, as was the 17-year-old driver of the other vehicle in the crash. Authorities offered conflicting accounts of the extent of the injuries.
The three children in the van, none wearing seat belts, were thrown from the vehicle. Police are continuing to investigate the crash, and no charges have been filed.
