France: Simple life in studio apartment
“OUR favorite accommodation on a recent five-city trip to Europe: a studio apartment in Paris. It is a gem of a place, owned by an American in Thousand Oaks. We picked up exquisite food and drink at the Rue Mouffetard market shops around the corner and then relaxed at ‘home’ at the end of our long sightseeing days.
“It had stairs, but we packed light and there’s a washing machine and a Metro stop across the street.”
Double from $100.

Britain: Top-notch curry specialties
“WHILE touring England’s Glastonbury area with my daughter last June, we chanced upon an unexpected culinary jewel. Centrally located, the 18th century Hawthorns Hotel is home to award-winning chef Simon Stuart, who excels in curries -- Indian, Moroccan, Thai etc. His specialties are reasonably priced. We also enjoyed a comfortable room. Book weeks ahead.”
Entrees from $17; double rooms from $56.
