Giles Rallies Padres Back to First Place
Brian Giles drove in a career-high seven runs and the San Diego Padres defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks, 14-10, Wednesday night at Phoenix to reclaim first place in the National League West.
The Padres had to hang on for the victory despite scoring nine runs in the first inning and taking an 11-2 lead into the sixth. Arizona scored eight runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 11-10 before Giles hit a three-run home run in the seventh.
The smallest crowd in Arizona history, 18,012, watched the Padres rock starter Juan Cruz (1-2), who retired only two of the 12 batters he faced.
St. Louis 1, New York 0 -- Mark Mulder (5-1) threw 8 1/3 scoreless innings at St. Louis to earn his third consecutive victory and Scott Rolen’s double in the sixth inning produced the run.
Atlanta 6, Florida 4 -- Chipper Jones hit a three-run walk-off homer in the 11th inning and, for the third consecutive game, the Braves rallied to beat the Marlins, who had gone ahead, 4-3, in the top half of the inning.
Milwaukee 8, Philadelphia 7 -- Geoff Jenkins’ run-scoring single with two out in the ninth lifted the Brewers to their third walk-off victory in a row, the first time a team has put that many together since Detroit in 2004.
Pittsburgh 7, Cincinnati 2 -- Oliver Perez (2-5), on the verge of being sent to the minor leagues with another bad start, gave up two runs in six innings and drove in two runs at Pittsburgh.
Chicago 5, Washington 0 -- Rookie Sean Marshall (3-1) had a no-hitter until Alfonso Soriano led off the sixth inning with a single but combined with three relievers on a one-hitter at Chicago.
