Immigrant Rights Rally Draws Thousands
From Times Wire Reports
Thousands of immigrant-rights supporters clogged major thoroughfares in central Phoenix, calling for more humane reform of immigration laws.
The turnout of 10,000 to 12,000 people surprised police and organizers alike. It was one of several demonstrations across the country (including Los Angeles County) that featured school walkouts and work stoppages.
Many participants said they were incensed by what they saw as punitive immigration proposals making their way through Congress.
