Kansas Shocked by Bradley

Now Kansas has a “Bradley Bummer†too.

Marcellus Sommerville scored 21 points and made five three-point baskets, and 13th-seeded Bradley handed fourth-seeded Kansas its second straight first-round exit with a 77-73 victory in the Oakland Regional on Friday night at Auburn Hills, Mich.

The Braves picked up their first NCAA tournament victory in 20 years and advanced to play fifth-seeded Pittsburgh in the second round Sunday.

Unlike the “Bucknell Bummer,†a year ago, when Wayne Simien missed a 15-footer at the buzzer to give the 14th-seeded Bison an improbable victory, Kansas looked unprepared and overwhelmed from the start in this one.

Bradley (21-10) led by 14 with 15:38 to go but let Kansas back in the game with three straight turnovers with about five minutes left. By the time the inexperienced Jayhawks finally got acclimated to the NCAA tournament pressure and intensity, however, it was too late.

Mario Chalmers made a three-pointer after one of the takeaways, a three-point play after the second and a runner in the lane after the final one that cut Bradley’s lead to 65-62 with 3:45 to play.

But Kansas (25-8) committed three of its 18 turnovers down the stretch, and Jeff Hawkins missed an open three-point shot in the corner that would have tied it with one minute to play.

Pittsburgh 79, Kent State 64 -- The fifth-seeded Panthers (25-7) scored so easily and often they frayed the net at one end of the court and just about wore out the twine at the other in a victory over the 12th-seeded Golden Flashes (25-9) at Auburn Hills, Mich.

Aaron Gray scored 17 and Ronald Ramon had 16 -- both shooting six for six from the field -- to lead a balanced attack as Pittsburgh made 67% of its shots.

Kevin Warzynski led Kent State with 15 points.

Memphis 94, Oral Roberts 78 -- Conference USA player of the year Rodney Carney had 19 points and Andre Allen matched his season high with 11 -- all in a late first-half spurt that put the top-seeded Tigers (31-3) ahead to stay in defeating the 16th-seeded Golden Eagles (21-12) at Dallas.

Darius Washington and Shawne Williams had 14 points each for Memphis, and Antonio Anderson had 10. The Tigers shot 60%t from the field (37 of 61) and matched a season high with 11 three-point baskets, the last Carney’s with 9:22 left that made it 78-63.

Caleb Green led five Oral Roberts players in double figures with 19 points.

Bucknell 59, Arkansas 55 -- Charles Lee and Kevin Bettencourt led an offense that lived on the three-point shot at Dallas, carrying the Bison into the second round for the second year in a row.

Eighth-seeded Bucknell (27-4) made a season-high 11 three-pointers and only six shots inside the arc. Lee, the Patriot League player of the year, scored 24 points and was four for seven on three-pointers. Bettencourt was five for 10 from beyond the arc for 18 points.

Jonathon Modica led ninth-seeded Arkansas (22-10) with 19 points.
