With the crack of the starting gun and the strains of the Randy Newman anthem “I Love L.A.,” an expected 25,000 runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes will commence the 21st annual Los Angeles Marathon downtown on Sunday morning. The participants will weave their way through the city, starting on Figueroa Street near 6th and ending on Flower Street near 5th. There will be more than 75 entertainment and music sites and nine medical stations along the marathon route. A finish line festival will take place at Flower and 3rd streets and will feature booths, refreshments and entertainment.
This year’s marathon plus two adjunct events -- a 5K run/walk and the L.A. Bike Tour -- are expected to attract more than 40,000 participants.
