N’DJAMENA, Chad -- Soldiers loyal to Chad’s president have repulsed an attempted military coup, the communications minister said Wednesday.
The coup plotters fled after being driven back by troops supporting President Idriss Deby in the capital Tuesday night, Communications Minister Hourmadji Moussa Doumngor said.
Since October, scores of defectors from the army have joined a number of Chadian rebel groups based in the area bordering Sudan’s western region of Darfur, the site of an uprising by Sudanese groups.
Sudan has accused Chad of harboring Darfur rebels, while Chad has said Sudan backs Chadian insurgents. Rights groups have said Chadian and Sudanese militias in Darfur have launched frequent cross-border raids, killing Chadian civilians.
