UCLA Biologist Ousted as UC Senate Chairman

From Times Staff Reports

University of California faculty leaders took the extraordinary step Monday of ousting UCLA biologist Clifford Brunk as chairman of the 10-campus system’s Academic Senate.

They passed a measure expressing “no confidence” in his leadership of the Senate, which represents the faculty on admissions and academic policies.

Replacing Brunk will be John B. Oakley, a UC Davis law professor. Brunk has come under fire for, among other things, failing to speak out more forcefully concerning an ongoing controversy about compensation packages for top administrators.
