Catch of the Day Saves Red Sox

Coco Crisp made a spectacular, diving catch to preserve Curt Schilling’s 10th win and the Boston Red Sox stretched their winning streak to 12 games Thursday night with a 4-2 victory over the New York Mets at Fenway Park.

David Ortiz homered in the eighth inning for Boston, sealing a three-game sweep. The Red Sox matched the longest winning streak in the majors since Houston won 12 in a row from Aug. 27 to Sept. 8, 2004.

Boston also tied the major league record of 16 straight errorless games set by the St. Louis Cardinals from July 30 to Aug. 16, 1992.

The Mets threatened with two out in the eighth against reliever Mike Timlin when Carlos Beltran singled. David Wright then hit a liner toward the gap in left-center, but Crisp sprinted over and made the catch.

Pittsburgh 7, Chicago White Sox 6 -- Freddy Sanchez led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a home run and the Pirates ended a 13-game losing streak, their longest since 1900.

Oakland 6, San Diego 5 -- Pinch-hitter Antonio Perez, batting .082, drew a bases-loaded walk with two out in the 14th inning at San Diego. The A’s rallied against Scott Cassidy without getting a hit. They had three walks -- one intentional -- a hit batter and a sacrifice.

San Francisco 2, Texas 1 -- Omar Vizquel’s line-drive single to right field with two out in the bottom of the eighth inning drove in Jason Ellison and enabled the Giants to complete a three-game sweep. The Rangers, who have lost five in a row, have scored only 11 runs during the skid.

Toronto 8, Washington 4 -- Roy Halladay got his 10th victory and the Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep at Toronto. The 2003 AL Cy Young award winner took a three-hitter into the seventh before being chased by consecutive doubles by Daryle Ward, Ryan Zimmerman and Marlon Anderson.

Philadelphia 4, Baltimore 0 -- The Phillies won at Baltimore to end their seven-game losing streak.

Cincinnati 6, Kansas City 5 -- Adam Dunn’s run-scoring double in the bottom of the eighth enabled the Reds to win consecutive games for the first time since June 8.

Seattle 3, Arizona 2 -- Raul Ibanez led off the top of the ninth inning with a home run to tie the score, and Yuniesky Betancourt’s two-out single drove in Kenji Johjima to give the Mariners their fifth consecutive victory. Ibanez’s 422-foot shot to center was originally ruled a triple.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Milwaukee 5, Chicago 4 -- The victory at Wrigley Field put the Brewers at 40-40, the 14th time this season they’ve been at .500. They haven’t been over the mark since May 29.

Mark Prior, who came off the disabled list June 18, lost his third consecutive start. He yielded eight hits and five runs in 5 2/3 innings.
