Don’t forget Ethiopia’s Jews

THE full-page article on Ethiopia, [“Ethiopia’s Rich Culture, Steeped in History,” Special Issue, July 16] did not find the space to include mention of the Ethiopian Jews, many of whom are now centered in Gondar.
The writer comments on the “blend of ancient religions and pagan beliefs” that still exists there but fails to include any mention of the thousands who stubbornly maintain their belief that they are the original Jews, living in Ethiopia from the time of the Bible.
In recent years, the North American Conference on Ethiopian Jewry has spearheaded an ongoing effort to resettle these devout Jews, scorned in their native land, to Israel.
