Transplant recipient welcomes Times’ probe

Re “Feds Ignore Transplant Site Standards,” June 29
As a double organ transplant recipient in 1994, I was delighted to read The Times’ investigation of transplant outcomes. It is certainly adding insult to injury when people with end-stage disease wait on a long list, praying each day that they will survive to receive their lifesaving organs, only to die because their hospital cannot provide the level of care they need.
Following my surgeries, I experienced many unforeseen complications. Ultimately, my liver failed and I received a second one. I believe that if I had not been listed at a large transplant facility, I would not have lived; I would have become one of the first-year death statistics instead of a contributing member of society.
