BOYS’ BASKETBALL
* Tyre Thompson, Compton Centennial: Made two free throws with one second remaining to finish with 30 points and the Apaches, ranked No. 6 in the Southland by The Times, defeated El Segundo, 84-78, in a Pioneer League opener.
* Noah Gottlieb, Venice: Scored 41 points in an 84-78 Western League loss to visiting and fourth-ranked Westchester, which led, 41-30, at halftime.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
* Brandi Hood, Norwalk Glenn: The junior had a career-high 37 points and 22 rebounds in leading the host Eagles to a 64-52 Suburban League victory over Norwalk (7-10, 0-3).
BOYS’ SOCCER
* Spencer Jones, Diamond Bar: Scored an unassisted goal from 25 yards out 15 minutes into what became a 1-0 Sierra League upset over previously unbeaten Chino, ranked No. 2 in the Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll. Ryan Delgadillo had nine saves in the shutout.
* Luis Miguel, San Clemente: Scored one goal and assisted on the other in leading the host Tritons, ranked No. 6 in the Division I poll, to a 2-1 South Coast League victory over No. 5 Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills (10-5-2, 0-2).
