An eye for modern and tribal

Thirty years in Telluride were enough for Mary Haggerty. Despite owning Sueno, a trendsetting modern and tribal home emporium in the Colorado mountain town, she moved last fall to Silver Lake. “It’s such a great mix of people and cultures here, it immediately felt like home,” says Haggerty, who has launched an L.A. version of Sueno that reflects the diversity of her new neighborhood. She and partner Eric Liekefet, below, stock swanky reupholstered modern vintage furniture, capiz shell table lamps, sculpture and functional art from Africa and the Pacific, and an array of the antique textiles that Haggerty has collected since the 1970s. “I sell all the things I have found and loved from around the world,” she says. Her eye for primitive works, such as the fuzzy colorful Turkish nomadic bedroll known as a tulu and the stone water jar lid from Java, shown here, is readily apparent in her collection of 14 original rug designs. Hand-loomed in Oaxaca and colored with natural ingredients such as walnut shell dye, the flat-woven wool rugs are earthy and geometric and work just as well in modern lofts as they do in traditional homes.
