Government Frees Jailed Former Prime Minister

Nepal’s royal government freed a former prime minister who had been jailed on graft charges by a commission that the Supreme Court annulled this week, an aide said.
King Gyanendra had fired Sher Bahadur Deuba before seizing direct control of the government and arresting politicians on Feb. 1, 2005. The king later created the Royal Commission for Corruption Control.
But the nation’s judiciary has largely retained its independence, and it annulled the commission and its decisions.
